You've just taken over a case. And what you're looking at… is a mess. Another vet's mess.
Maybe it's steroids and NSAIDs prescribed at the same time. Maybe it's antibiotics thrown at a dog with diarrhea just because. And the owners are convinced their vet is God, while you're standing there thinking — how on earth do I work with THIS?
In this episode I talk about what to do when you inherit a badly handled case — because there are two things you need to manage at once. How do you talk to the owners WITHOUT throwing the other vet under the bus, while still doing right by the animal? And how do you handle that frustration and powerlessness you're feeling inside?
Because here's the thing — you don't know the full story. You weren't in that consult room. You don't know what pressure the other vet was under, and you don't even know if what the owner is telling you is the truth, because stressed and upset people don’t tend to remember accurately.
I also share the exact phrases I use to change a treatment plan diplomatically, and how to keep your focus on the one question that actually matters: what is best for this pet, right now, with what I've got?
